September 28, 2011 marked the official Grand Opening of the North
Hudson Higher Education Center at Hudson County Community College.
“Great things are happening at Hudson County Community College,” said
Glen Gabert, HCCC president. “This is a place students can finally feel
like they’re in college.” Upon entering the new facility, guests,
students and officials were greeted by the Union City Marching Band who
played popular and classic songs. Guided tours of the facility ran for
two hours. At twelve o’clock officials took their place for the start
of the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Senator Robert Menendez, Mayor Brian Stack of Union City, Hudson County
Board of Freeholders, William O’Dea, were amongst the many that took
part in the cutting of the ribbon.
A formal dedication began as the multi-purpose room on the second floor
became packed all the way back to the door. Silence heaped as the
Hudson County Sherriff’s Honor Guard presented The flags. The project
cost was $28,165,518, which Senator Menendez emphasized was money spent
well. “Today reminds me of what I am fighting for in the United States
senate,” said Menendez. I do not understand some of my colleagues who
suggest that cutting educational assistance, like cutting back on
student loans and Pell grants is the way to prosperity.” Dr. Paula
Pando, vice president at HCCC, closed the ceremony by introducing the
Ballroom Dancers of North Bergen to perform, enhancing the urban,
diverse atmosphere’s flow throughout the building. The
state-of-the-art, high rise, masonry stands on Kennedy Boulevard in
Union City. The facility has seven floors occupied by science labs, a
hightech library, an outdoor courtyard, student lounges and study
areas, upon much more. “This place will remain vital for Hudson County
for a long, long, time,” said Thomas DeGise, Hudson County executive.
