Video Game Review: L.A. Noire
By: Eamonn Dwyer
Before you read the review of L.A. Noire, know how to pronounce it
so you can ask for it in the game store (L. A. Noire – “nwah). Funny,
when I said it the right way, the clerk did not know what I was talking
about, but when I said, “Nor-ee,” he knew. Now for the definition
itself, it is not associated with the French red wine Pinot noir
(nwar); but, it relates to a genre (john-ra) relating to crime; tough,
cynical characters, violence and danger in sleazy settings. L.A. Noire
is a unique thriller that places the player in one of the most violent
periods in L.A. history – not such a City of Angels (that’s what Los
Angeles means). When playing this game you assume the role of Cole
Phelps, a World War II hero and rookie cop. The gameplay is inspired by
actual cases. You are the detective who must solve them in order to
continue throughout the game’s story line. You Are engaged in shootouts
(game only please), finding clues, interrogations, chasing after
criminals and rough knuckle-bashing scuffles.
As Cole Phelps you work your way through the ranks of the LAPD: from
patrol officer to the traffic division, homicide, vice and arson. Every
case you encounter includes investigating clues, questioning witnesses,
tracking suspects and interrogation. This game gives you a feel of a
film of the 1940’s through the 1950’s. I personally enjoyed this game
because of its lack of flaws - such as unrealistic animation, poor
dialogue and emotional traits in intense situations. L. A. has a great
blend of action and suspense. It kept me on my toes the whole time.
L.A. Noire is a game that I would recommend to an older age group that
enjoys the feeling like you.
