Republican Wins Congressional Seat In Democratic Stronghold

Republican Bob Turner beat out Democrat challenger David Weprin in a special election held to find a replacement for disgraced Congressman Anthony Weiner. The margin of victory was projected to be 54 percent to 46 percent. Turner’s victory is especially significant for several reasons. First, the district is overwhelmingly Democrat – registration for the party is approximately 4-to-1 over Republicans. Second, Weprin is an Orthodox Jew who comes from a prominent family in Queens, factors which should have played heavily in his favor, considering the district is nearly 40-percent Jewish, and has a significant Orthodox Jewish population.
